Proportionately there aren’t many women who are bald compared to men. It makes sense, since hair loss can be a lot more common in men. This probably explains why it seems to be a lot more shocking to see a bald woman than a bald man. But should it be?
Daring to Be Bald
I believe that some women look absolutely beautiful bald. In fact many bald women will play it up, adding really bold eye make-up, or perhaps using some stunning earrings that stand out a lot more than they would if they had hair. Women go bald for many reasons, and some women try to cover it up where others do not.
In the case of trichotillomania it can be hard, as there can be bald patches. I know people who choose to shave off their hair (or at least I have heard of people who do) as a way of ending the hair pulling problem. That is, either shaving it bald or extremely close to it. But would I do it?
I have to say I think being bald or at least having very short hair would be liberating. No longer would I worry about pulling my hair, but it isn’t just that.
How Important Is Hair Really?
We place a lot of importance on things like hair. But when we lose something like that, we have to deal with it. Losing your hair isn’t like one of your organs failing. People can live perfectly well without hair, though psychologically it can be devastating.
That is why I admire bald women who still show the world that they are beautiful, and they don’t need hair to make them so.
We will all remember Jade Goody as she was when she lost her hair, but I think she looked beautiful. She may not have had trichotillomania, or have even heard of it, but I am still so inspired.

My name's Penny, and I started OnTrich (a trichotillomania blog) to try and raise awareness about hair pulling, and also as a way to help me deal with my own pulling. I'm a 23 year old girl from the UK and I've been pulling for 13 years. Get in touch if you want to chat or need any help - I love meeting people here.

For women there hair is a big part of who they are. The general public judges a women on her hair, so going bald can bring a strong reaction from the general public.
