In finding methods that help trichotillomania I’m always coming across small suggestions in the forums that I haven’t heard before. One of these is a head massage. This is most commonly recommended to stimulate hair growth, though I wondered if it could help trichotillomania in any other way.
What Is A Head Massage?
The most common type of massage I’ve come across is the Indian Head Massage. This is an alternative therapy, designed to stimulate certain energies within our body. It is even believed that, when our energy stops flowing properly, it can cause negative ailments including hair loss – which is what the head massage helps to prevent.
However, head massage is also designed to be a treat for the body. As well as Indian Head Massage, the ‘tingler’ massage is extremely popular. I have a vibrating version of this, and it sends shivers across your head and down your spine!

How Can A Head Massage Help Trichotillomania?
There are a lot of claims stating that head massage helps hair grow quicker by stimulating the blood flow in the scalp. Whether this is true or not, massaging our own head is quite easy in the shower and may help in our efforts.
Aside from hair regrowth, I believe that head massage could help for a few emotional and physical reasons:
- It provides a way to help relax,
- It is a distraction once you feel those urges to pull,
- It’s a treat for yourself and for your head,
- Massaging the temples is a great way to relieve stress,
- It may detract from any pain caused by hair pulling.
Conclusion
Massaging your head isn’t going to be a miracle cure either for hair pulling or for hair growth. However, it may help both in subtle ways – and if anything a distraction to trichotillomania is always welcome.
Have you ever tried a head massage to help trichotillomania?

I’ve always wanted to go and get this done, but I’ve avoided it because of the thinned areas and bald patches, so ironically I’m waiting till it grows back before i actually try it.
I understand that feeling! I am often the same when it comes to going to the hairdresser. I don’t know if a massage would make me stop pulling, but it would be a very nice thing to try.
I went to go get my hair done and I was nervous my hair dresser would notice because I had a little bald patch on the top in the middle and she did notice so I lied and said I always have my hair up and its probably “too tight” that it pulled it out. It was so embarrasing!! But maybe if you try keeping your hair up you can’t get to it (for those who have problems with the hair in the middle). Also try bandaids on your fingers, it helps for me!!
Stop now before it’s too late.
