Christina – Argh yeah that explains just how irrational and weird it can be. Don’t even know why the urges go away and then come back again. Could you pinpoint something in your life that was different during that year and a half? At least, if anything, it’s shown that it is possible to stop pulling for a good chunk of time.

I know what you mean, about not pulling when you don’t feel like it that is. It really should be easy, but it isn’t.
I didn’t feel like pulling my hair for about a year and a half that I started wondering why I did in the first place. That is until the urge came back a month ago. Now I spend my time wondering why I didn’t pull for that time. Hopefully it’ll pass soon before it gets impossible to hide.

Mia – I also do it when I’m bored, or when I’m doing things like reading. The best advice I could give would be just to keep your hands busy. I also have long hair that is a lot thinner than it used to be. It’s frustrating, but I’m thankful for the fact that I do at least still have long hair. The best thing I did for myself and my hair pulling was to write about it here – it helped get my feelings out.

I love to read stories related to me because then I know I’m not alone. I’ve been pulling my hair out for a while now. I do it when I’m nervous and when i’m in bed. It doesn’t bother me when I’m alone but yet when I’m getting ready for school I am so self consious. I have beautiful long dark brown hair that used to be thick and it makes me soooo depressed!!!! How do I stop!???? Please

Thank you for your luck – I understand what you say about “I have very strong will power in all other areas of my life but I can’t stop pulling hair” – it’s important to remember that trich doesn’t make you weak at all.

Milly – Your hair generally grows at about half an inch a month, even if it’s been pulled out. Good luck!

Diamond – Sorry I didn’t reply sooner. Everyone’s hair is different. Since yours is curly, the length isn’t going to show as obviously. Hair generally grows at half an inch a month but this will probably *look* like less for you. Sorry I can’t help much more!

Tal – Our hair grows at about half an inch each month. Try really hard not to pull when it’s growing out, it can be tempting because of that fuzzy feeling, but the good news is it will grow back if you give it a chance
