Meditation is increasingly being used in the Western world as a treatment for stress and anxiety. This ancient technique means taking time to contemplate silently, and let thoughts go past you. When it comes to trichotillomania just about anything is worth a try, so here are my thoughts on whether meditation can help trichotillomania.
A Time to Relax
Many trichsters will report pulling out their hair during times of stress and worry. I have definitely experienced this myself. At times you think things are going wrong so you deserve to be able to pull out your hair as a comfort. If this is the case then meditation can be a great way to stop thinking about everything that’s worrying you.
Sitting quietly, letting thoughts pass during meditation can help trichotillomania in the way that it removes you from whatever is bothering you.
Pulling Without Realising
I pull the most not during times of stress, but in times where I’m not doing anything at all. Letting my mind relax can prevent myself from being able to stop pulling. This is where I think meditation will not always help.
However, if you do it properly then meditation can help you to feel less distracted and more focused for the day. I don’t know about you, but that certainly helps me to pull less. All it really takes is a little perseverance before you can really learn to let your mind switch off during meditation. This is why I believe it can really help trichotillomania, as well as a number of other conditions.

My name's Penny, and I started OnTrich (a trichotillomania blog) to try and raise awareness about hair pulling, and also as a way to help me deal with my own pulling. I'm a 23 year old girl from the UK and I've been pulling for 13 years. Get in touch if you want to chat or need any help - I love meeting people here.

Meditation, yoga plus eft training will definitely lessen one’s anxiety and depression.
