How to Keep Your Hands Busy

People with trichotillomania will often find their hands moving subconsciously – it could be to hairs on the scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or anywhere else on the body. Due to this many of us look for ways to keep our hands busy. Here are a few ideas I came up with quickly…..

  1. Typing with both hands.
  2. Playing a musical instrument.
  3. Holding stress balls.
  4. Wearing gloves.
  5. Gardening.
  6. Stroking fabric.
  7. Knitting.
  8. Cooking.
  9. Ironing.
  10. Cleaning.
  11. Playing solitaire and other card games.
  12. Playing the Wii.
  13. Sitting on your hands.
  14. Reading (tough to keep both hands holding the book!)
  15. Hold firmly onto something.
  16. Crafts.
  17. Painting nails.
  18. Putting on makeup.
  19. Making origami.
  20. Fix up your hair.

Out of these I have to admit I am rarely on top of what my hands are doing and don’t usually employ specific methods. I try to keep both hands holding onto books. The problem is I take breaks from reading to pull, which is so frustrating not least because I don’t get any reading done!  I also play piano, which is great as it is completely distracting.

Please add to the list if you have any advice!

Shuffle cards. You need both hands to do that :)
