Looking for A Trichotillomania Cure?

I wrote a post recently about whether there was such a thing as a trichotillomania cure. There is no definitive cure, though there are many things that people do to help them stop pulling hair. However, I don’t think it’s a good idea to look for a ‘cure’ – rather a way to make the condition manageable as part of your life, and to be happy with yourself. (I know that’s easier said than done!)

When Searching For A Trichotillomania Cure

I don’t think there is any harm in trying as many things as possible in trying to stop pulling your hair. And believe me, I am no expert, just writing out my thoughts. I know that there is no one thing that definitely works, otherwise we’d all be doing it!

But I do know that trying to stop can be extremely frustrating. I am the kind of person who doesn’t find it easy to stick to things, so when one thing doesn’t work I get disheartened very quickly and will probably give up (look at my numerous attempts at going pull-free!).

Putting All Your Eggs In One Basket

I believe the best way towards your trichotillomania cure is to try different things. Don’t just focus on your hair, but also focus on your life. Focus on accepting trich, but knowing you can still make efforts to stop pulling.

Also, try not to quit straight away. I keep going pull free for about a week and giving up, but I’m still going to try more in the future because I know it has worked. Things get easier as you incorporate them into your routine, which I am still struggling with but I do believe it’s possible.

Even if you do still pull your hair, at least you would have learned something about yourself. That means your effort hasn’t been wasted.

What holds you back from working towards your trichotillomania cure?

      Hi maria,
I’m so sorry to hear how bad it is for you. One thing I am going to have to tell you is there is no miracle ‘cure’ but there are so many ways you can help yourslef deal with it.

When I was your age I was pulling a lot and my parents didn’t help. Just remember that they might not understand exactly what you are going through. if you have the courage to talk to them, it will help them to understand a lot more. Unfortunately I never had the courage to talk to mine.

Reading on the internet about others who have it really helped me so much. If you want to email back or anythign, please do.

Ok.. I feel like I’m going crazy.. I have always had problems with finishing things. I have pulling my hair out since the age of 6 or 7. For the past 7 years i have not pulled my hair out, but my doctor has put me on retalin, and now im steady doing it again. I have NEVER finished anything in my whole life from High school till now. I want to be just like everyone else but it seems like I just can’t do it.. I need to go back to school and get my GED, but its like I just don’t have the energy to do it. My kids are upset with me cause I always say I’m going to get my GED before my son graduates but of course he already has. What is wrong with me?? No one has ever touch me in a bad way or anything like that. I don’t understand why I can’t just get it together!

Marsha – I am no doctor but I wouldn’t be surprised if the pulling is related to not being able to finish things. I know it affects my concentration, and it seems like it affects you like this on a bigger scale. It must be so hard, but just keep trying and good luck!
