There are many weird and wonderful things that people do when they have trich, but are they really so weird? I hadn’t heard of some of them before, but really they all come down to the same thing.
Pulling whilst sleeping: This is also common, and just one more reason why some people with trich find it impossible to stop pulling.
I don’t think I do this. I have read about it being common in children, but I guess it is probably something that can happen to anyone. Some methods to combat this include wearing gloves in bed, though some people will simply take the gloves off in their sleep. I can’t imagine how frustrating this must be.
This series of posts on trichotillomania rituals shows that there are so many little rituals, and these are just related to trich! It goes to show that everyone’s different, but it boils down to similar problems. If I have missed anything then I apologise – I do not think that any ritual is more or less strange than another! These are just the main ones that I have come across through forums, and if there are any others I would love to hear about them. I will post more detailed posts in a series in the future so keep reading.

My name's Penny, and I started OnTrich (a trichotillomania blog) to try and raise awareness about hair pulling, and also as a way to help me deal with my own pulling. I'm a 22 year old girl from the UK and I've been pulling for 12 years. Get in touch if you want to chat or need any help - I love meeting people here.

Nope, they’re not any weirder than any of the other things we humans do to cope with overwhelming anxiety. I’ve been a hair twister on and off all my life, rather than a puller. Less obvious unless you were to catch me when I had one side of my hair twisted into a long knot, but not so different really.
